Relational and contextual approach to psychotherapy
Initially trained as a social worker, Jason Phelps integrates social and relational factors to the classical biological and psychological emphasized by conventional psychiatry and psychology. The relational and social environments in which we grow up and currently live have a huge impact on our access to resources and our perceived choices and power in the world. Under certain conditions, individual, couple and family therapy can be combined to deal with relational issues affecting mental health. In some cases, psychotherapy can be a safe base from which to organise resistance and advocate social change where needed.
Integrative and client centred counselling services
Client centred psychotherapy adapts therapeutic process to the preferred style, personality and specific needs of the client. In contrast to model centred approaches which prefer clients conform to the needs of the model. Jason Phelps can collaboratively integrate elements of humanistic counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic psychotherapy and mindfulness meditation as needed.
LGBTQIA+ informed psychotherapy services
Jason Phelps offers psychotherapy services informed by feminist, queer, trans and other emancipatory movements. Individual mental health exists within a social context that can be oppressive and alienating. Sometimes, psychotherapy can be more about helping otherwise healthy people survive a dysfunctional society.
